Challenges in the implementation of process safety in the chemical industry are still a major concern for various stakeholders. To develop a more comprehensive policy framework, the Chemical Vocational Board of the Indonesian Engineers Association (BKK PII) held a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) 1 entitled “Strengthening the Process Safety Regulatory Framework: Integration of Best Practices Across Industries” at the Faculty of Engineering, University of Indonesia, Thursday (6/2/2025).

This FGD is part of a series of Annual Meeting (AM) BKK PII 2025, where the University of Indonesia acts as the host. The event was opened by the Rector of Universitas Indonesia, who also serves as the Chairman of the Advisory Board of the AM BKK PII Committee, Prof. Dr. Ir. Heri Hermansyah. In his speech, he emphasized that this discussion could be the first step in proposing process safety regulations to the Indonesian government.

Chairman of BKK PII, Dr. Ir. Sripeni Inten Cahyani, in her speech stated that this FGD is a strategic tool for BKK PII in carrying out its role as a government partner, facilitator, and catalyst to support national development and programs.

Cross-Sector Collaboration for Strengthening Process Safety
The FGD brought together participants from various sectors, including the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Pertamina Hulu Energi, Ministry of Industry, Industrial Engineering, Pupuk Kujang Cikampek, APTEKIM, FIKI, as well as academics, industry players, and other professional associations.

One of the main topics discussed was the importance of building a culture of risk awareness, considering that the chemical industry has a high level of complexity. The participants also highlighted the need for a firm policy in regulating the safety management of change in this sector.

Some of the recommendations proposed in the discussion include:

  1. Formulation of stricter regulations related to process safety management
  2. Increased training and education programs for industrial workers
  3. Regular supervision and audits to ensure compliance with safety standards
  4. Providing incentives for industries that implement good safety practices
  5. Implementation of sanctions for violations of work safety regulations
  6. Strengthening collaboration between government, industry and professional associations

FGD 1: The Start of the BKK PII 2025 AM Series
This FGD was the opening event of the BKK PII 2025 Annual Meeting series. Chairman of AM BKK PII 2025, Mohamad Agung, emphasized that there are still four other FGDs that will take place before the peak event in September.

With discussions involving various stakeholders, it is hoped that process safety regulations in Indonesia can be further strengthened, so that the chemical industry becomes safer and more sustainable in the future.
