My primary research focus is controlled release of drugs and bioactive compounds from biodegradable and biocompatible polymers.

Micro and nanospheres of PLGA (polylactic-co-glycolic acid) were succesfully attached to porous alloy using supercritical CO2 so that dexamethasone, a widely used anti-inflammatory drug encapsulated within PLGA, could be released in a controlled manner to help reduce or eliminate the inflammatory response by the local tissue.

Presently, I am working on applications of chitosan as a controlled release media for bioactive compounds such as acetogenins extracted from sirsak leaves. Two important challenges have been identified: develop-ing an efficient extraction scheme to obtain concentrated acetogenin fraction, and, producing acetogenin-loaded chitosan microspheres with a high acetogenin loading and a release profile suitable for colon-targeted delivery. Work is in progress to find new ways to produce chitosan-based formulation an effective, inexpensive, and safe treatment of cancer.
