Course Description

Applied thermodynamics is an elective course that focuses on advanced applications of the principles of thermodynamics. In this course, students solve open-ended problems selected from various topics of thermodynamics (mass and energy balances, cyclic processes, fluid phase equilibria, reaction equilibria). Students will be able to use various thermodynamics application softwares such as phase equilibria 3-D diagrams (phase), symbolic manipulation (macsyma), programming language (fortran)Course participants are expected to: (a) apply the principles of thermodynamics to solve significant problems that are too complex to be solve in the required thermodynamics course; (b) learn to use modern computational tools, including writing computer programs either individually or in group improve their self-directed learning skills at individual and group levels as they learn in a hands-on setting.

Course Learning Outcomes

  • Analyze thermodynamics problems through a thorough review of fundamental aspects, experimental data, and green chemistry.
  • Utilize current information from scientific journals to support analysis.
