The Department of Chemical Engineering, Universitas Indonesia was first established under the name of the Department of Gas Engineering, Universitas Indonesia in 1981. Initially, the Gas Engineering Study Program was established under the Department of Metallurgy to meet the need for engineering graduates in the field of gas liquefaction. In the same year, the Chemical Engineering Study Program was established under the Department of Mechanical Engineering. This study program was directed to meet the shortage of manpower in the development of the Chemical Engineering industry in Indonesia. In 1985, the two study programs were combined into the Department of Gas and Petrochemical Engineering, which offers a chemical engineering study program with an emphasis on courses in gas and petrochemical technology.
Based on the UI-BHMN Statute, the term study program was changed to department in 2003, and in 2006 the Department of Gas and Petrochemical Engineering changed to the Department of Chemical Engineering. In order to increase the role of the Department of Chemical Engineering in the era of biotechnology, in 2008 the Bioprocess Engineering Study Program (PSTB) was established.
Current graduate competency standards are based on those recommended by ABET and the Bologna Process and on feedback from graduates and industry representatives, aiming to produce well-educated graduates who are able to make significant contributions wherever they choose to live and work. This is evident in the fact that the Department of Chemical Engineering, Universitas Indonesia, has now become one of the leading chemical engineering departments in Indonesia, with recognition by the ASEAN University Network (AUN) for the Undergraduate Program in Chemical Engineering and the Undergraduate Program in Bioprocess Engineering, accredited as Excellent by the Japan Accreditation for Engineering Education (JABEE) and the Indonesian Accreditation Board for Engineering Education (IABEE) for the Undergraduate Program in Chemical Engineering and the Undergraduate Program in Bioprocess Engineering.

“To become an excellent and impactful Chemical Engineering/Bioprocess Engineering Study Program, dedicated to educating the nation’s future and improving the welfare of society, thereby contributing to the development of both Indonesian and global communities.”
Universitas Indonesia has several departments in each faculty, the Department of Chemical Engineering (DTK), is one of the departments in the Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Indonesia, in an organizational hierarchy, the department is headed by the head of the Department who served under the Dean. In carrying out their duties, the head of the department is assisted by the secretary of the department, the coordinator and the head of the laboratory.
The Department of Chemical Engineering has two study programs, the chemical engineering study program and the bioprocess engineering study program, each led by a head of study program.
100% of lecturers in Department of Chemical Engineering have Doctoral degrees (Ph.D. degrees).
