The Department of Chemical Engineering, University of Indonesia (DTK UI) successfully held a Product Exhibition designed by Chemical Engineering and Bioprocess Engineering students which took place in the Lobby of Building K, Faculty of Engineering, University of Indonesia (07/06/2022). This exhibition is a form of final semester exam for the Product Design course which is mandatory for students in Semester VI of lectures. This activity aims to provide real experience for students to introduce a product prototype that they have designed. There are at least 36 products designed by students displayed at this exhibition.
This exhibition activity was opened by the Head of the Department, Dr. Bambang Heru Susanto, ST, MT. The exhibition initiated by the Product Design Lecturer Team (Prof. Misri Gozan, Dr. Dewi Tristantini, Dr. Yuswan Muharam, Dr. Rahma Muthia, and Dr. Ibnu Maulana H.) was attended by guest lecturers from Bolu Abant Izzet Baysal University (Assoc. Prof. Dr. Turgay Pekdemir) who have experience as industrial practitioners in several countries such as England, Japan, and Switzerland. Not only that, several practitioners with backgrounds in the chemical and biochemical product industry (most of whom are alumni of DTK UI) were also invited to this activity and acted as examiners.
During the Product Design lecture, students are trained to be able to use the knowledge gained from several previous courses to be applied to the design of chemical and biological products coherently. Before this exhibition was held, each group had gone through a series of assignments related to the stages of designing a product which included tracing Needs, Ideas, Selection and Manufacture, Supply Chain, HSE, and Economic Feasibility. In addition, students are also encouraged to communicate well and work together in a team to solve problems related to a product to be made.
The exhibition was very lively. Visitors and examiners seemed enthusiastic to find out more about the product prototypes displayed at the exhibition stands they visited. At the end of the exhibition, all examiners collected and discussed the results of the product evaluation from each group together with the lecturer. As a result, all examiners were satisfied and proud of the learning achievements (CPL) of each group that appeared and gave praise to several groups that had exceeded the examiner’s expectations. Criticism and suggestions from the examiner have been accepted and become special notes for the lecturer for improvement in the coming year.
This activity is expected to be able to encourage students to apply the product design knowledge they have received for one semester in the industry. In addition, students are expected to be stimulated to carry out technology-based entrepreneurial activities (technopreneurship) in accordance with the knowledge they received in the product design course.
